Collage Painting

Title: "Inspiring Person"
Media: Mixed Media (Paper, CitraSolv, Acrylic Paint, Pen, Gel Medium)
Date: March 30, 2010

Preliminary Sketch

I created this collage painting in a workshop. We were asked to create a piece based on a famous person who is inspiring or who inspired us. I chose John Calvin. The word and tree are ideas from the cover of one of his most famous writings, Institutes of the Christian Religion. In the background, I included the first paragraph of his book as well as some verses from the Bible, John 3:16, Proverbs 22:17, and Proverbs 22:1. Plans are being made to use this piece, along with all over teacher collage paintings, in an installation.

Side Views

Before the workshop, I was familiar with Gel Medium and several collage techiques related to overlapping paper. However, I learned to use CitraSolv to create abstract designs and colored paper by applying the chemical to photos, perhaps from a magazine, and moving the ink around.
