Drawings with Names
Title: "Claire"
Media: Marker
Date: January 2011
Title: "Ella"
Media: Marker
Date: January 2011
I made these drawings as gifts for a cousin's daughters after visiting them around the holidays last year. Ella, especially, saw some of the black and white, non-objective drawings I like to create and started calling them "quilts," which was apparently her connection and what she thought of when looking at the drawings. So, I decided to create a drawing for her and her sister but draw in color to match of their rooms.

Some Updates
My blog, (and I,) just celebrated a birthday on October 3. My blog turned 3 years old since I started it in 2008.
I have been working on a few projects, and I was able to enter them into 2 local fairs. I will try to post pictures and results in the next few weeks.
I have been back in school, after summer break, teaching art now for about a month and a half.
Most of my time for working on projects has been spent helping a couple friends with pictures, creating a blog, and creating a picture calendar.

Title: "Landscaping"
Media: Pen & Ink
Date: August 2011
These drawings were gifts for some new friends, and I tried to create patterns, designs and images reflective of them. He works in landscaping, and she has a great sense of Interior Design and Decoration. The letter S represents the initial of their name.

I Called It a Collage
Title: "Marks"
Media: Pen & Ink, Acrylic Paint
Date: July 2011
This piece is approximately 11"x14" and was a housewarming gift for a friend. I incorporated some colors that are visible in the home with some variation in their shades. When I was thinking through the idea of this piece, I first thought I would use more of a collage technique with some 'hodge podge' techniques on the background by using gel medium and speciality papers. However, when I finally began the art-making process, I started 'printing.' I used found objects to apply paint in specific places and in particular shapes to create the grid. Each time I printed a block, I used a slightly different amount of paint and different amounts of force, which helped to create the texture and negative spaces. I used open and closed shapes to create implied texture seen as shapes, dots and lines that touch and overlap. Finally, I added some details in the negative space, (words and drawn textures,) which reflect interests of my friend as well as thoughts and concepts associated with faith and a peaceful home. While you may see a 'collage' of shapes and colors, this piece is actually not a collage at all, in the strictest sense, but a non-objective composition created with printing techniques.

Initial Pen & Ink
Title: "L"
Media: Pen & Ink
Date: May 2011
Title: "C"
Media: Pen & Ink
Date: July 2011
I am continuing to enjoy drawing non-objective compositions with pen and ink, and one of the easiest ways for me to personalize a composition for a gift is to incorporate a monogram or initial. These two drawings were gifts for some old friends and former co-workers who I have known for more than 12 years.

Postcard Designs: "Here Fishy, Fishy"
The shape, color and texture of fish inspire me. So, for a couple of my latest postcard designs, I incorporated images of fish.
Media: Digital Photography, Marker
Media: Colored Pencils, Marker, Pen & Ink
I also altered my usual abstract pen and ink style and used the process to create a border around my original photograph and then to create texture and stylized scales in my drawing of a fish. Both designs incorporate overlapping of images, shapes and colors and give the impression of depth.

Clay Bowls
My students and I recently created these clay bowls for an Empty Bowls Project, sponsored by the Second Harvest Food Bank. Second Harvest Food Bank holds a luncheon, and donors buy a ticket to the lunch to help raise money for the food bank. People attending the luncheon choose an empty bowl to take home with them as a reminder of the problem with hunger many people face today as they 'figuratively' look into empty bowls day after day.

Title: "Falling to a Pattern"
Media: Pen & Ink, Marker, Yarn

These are two of my latest postcard designs. I incorporated images that reflect my journey as a student, teacher, and artist. I also incorporated several of my favorite media and art-making processes: drawing abstract designs with pen, weaving, and creating texture with mixed media processes.
